What began Penfield?

Harvey Gross started Penfield in 1975 in Hudson, Mass. Penfield specialized in down jackets and outerwear and although the designs were basic the quality and fit was always the best. Penfield was one of the first companies to use the now famous 60/40 fabric as well as Polar Fleece, and was one of the earliest adopters of Gore-Tex.
 

First Job?

Family textile business – was a tough apprenticeship and put me off the business for a few years so I went and did some other stuff – but I came back to it – it’s in my blood and can’t really imagine doing anything else.
 

Who is your style icon?

Am I allowed 2? Steve McQueen and JFK.
 

How does your product make a difference?

Keeps people really warm and looking good at the same time. And you can dig out that Penfield in 3,5,15 years time and it’ll still look good  and function well.
 

What is your personal soundtrack for the Summer?

My 10  year old daughter, Florence who never stops singing!
 

What is the process of crafting and creating quality menswear?

Just enough detail but never too much. Great fabrics & fits and it’s got to feel special when you put it on. Having an amazing team of talented/dedicated people also helps.

What’s your favorite indulgence?

Taking time to go fly fishing with great friends in some beautiful spots around the world.
 

Describe your style & wardrobe staples?

Outback vest,  Edwin khakis or selvedge, oxford shirt,  vintage Florsheim Imperials or Vans.
 

What do you always carry on you?

What about yourself is reflected in your work and vice versa?

A commitment to quality,  always the long view, enjoying and appreciating the industry and the people that I am so lucky to work with.
